Diavolo reinvents dance, re-imagines theater, and redefines thrills. Theatergoers around the world are always wondering what sort of wizardry Mr. Heim will conjure up next for his daring troupe of performers. Diavolo takes movement, athletics, and daring to the extreme, creating abstract narratives through surreal tableaux in which inspiration thrives.

2012 / 2013 Touring Season:

Fearful Symmetries

Fearful Symmetries, starts and ends as a cube.  This cube symbolizes the beginning of consciousness, representing mankind’s relationship with wisdom, truth and science.  Fearful Symmetries illuminates the parallel between mathematics and the human soul by creating a metaphor of bodies and geometry interacting. Like a sculptor carving a raw piece of stone, the performers act as abstract factory workers to discover and explore the possibilities of the cube and their environment

Repertory Concert

A selection from Diavolo’s extensive repertoire of surreal structures and movement.

Underway (New Works in Process)

Cubicle

Whimsical and percussive set pieces inspired by the office cubicle. Workers confined to a rigidly defined space may suffer ennui and malaise or their creative spirits may emerge to find some entertaining responses to their boundaries imposed on them.

TRANSIT SPACE

Commissioned by the Center of Performing Arts at Penn State as part of the Creative Campus Inovations Program, and co-commissioned by the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles. The new piece will explore the culture of extreme sports and the aspirations of a younger generation of athletes to go higher, faster and farther then their generation that preceded them.

Fluid Infinities

Commissioned by the LA Phil (Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director) and set to the score of Philip Glass’s Symphony No. 3, Fluid Infinities is the third piece in the collaboration between Diavolo Dance Theater and The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Fluid Infinities will tour in the 13-14 season. Co-commissioners for the piece are being sought for the 12-13 season.

“World class: exacting choreography. Elegance, power, beauty with the thrill of danger, a special way of dancing..." –Hannoversche Allgemeine, Germany
“Heim puts his feel for props, his knack for kinetic drama and his taste for danger in the service of a metaphor, and the result is dazzling.” –Newsday, New York
