Donald Byrd continues his brilliant career of creating electrifying, contemporary, sensual dances with his Seattle- based company. Byrd’s canvas ranges from the politics of the moment to the eternal narratives of the classics. His work demands speed and precision from his dancers and commands the rapt attention of any audience.

2012 / 2013 Touring Season:

The Theater of Needless Talents

Based on works by the Jewish artists in the infamous Nazi fortress, Terrazin, a supposedly privileged settlement that was actually a transit hub to the holocaust. The Theater or Needless Talents asks: “If today was the last day of our life, would you choose to spend it making art?”

Love

It’s the one emotional state that is the most difficult to define. Byrd makes a frank inquiry into the mutliple meanings of this word: platonic, erotic, familial, and religious.Performed to the Cello Suites by Benjamin Britten, Love explores these complexities in order to pass through the difficult moments and into the space of profound joy that only love can provide.

“the final duet...was remarkable, mirroring almost every possible emotion the two characters might have felt, from love, of course, to anger to maternal dependency to death..." –The New York Times

"The dancers never merely "step." Instead, they slice and slap and stomp, wielding their bodies like percussion instruments. And they don't just get airborne — they get
catapulted"
 –Seattle Times
