Timpones Restaurant, Urbana Il Henriot Champagne Brut, Blanc de Blanc NV
After a long day of work at the Krannert Center Theaters, we find ourselves at the table with Mike Ross, Director of the Krannert Center; Tammey Kikta, Assistant Director for Artistic Services along with various other friends from the Krannert and two artists; Julia Rhoads of Lucky Plush Productions, and Jason Neulander, writer /director of The Intergalactic Nemesis theater series.
As is our habit, when in Champaign-Urbana, no visit is complete without a visit to Timpones, the Ital/American dinner house, walking distance from the theater. If you drink wine, it’s the go to place for a nice meal and adult beverage.
It’s a working dinner (actually a dinner break for Julia who is hard at work on a new piece in the Krannert’s Playhouse Theater) so something light and refreshing is in order, to capture a kind of celebratory vibe. I don’t know everyone here, but bubbly is usually a crowd pleaser and I am happy to see on the list, champagne from House of Henriot. Specifically, it’s the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs.
I’ve thought about this champagne in the past, but never had it before. In a word, it was outstanding! I am not sure how long this particular bottle had been sleeping in the vinoteque at Timpones, but clearly, it had really settled down and begun to develop some serious complexity. The chardonnay quality was really showing this evening; deep with beautiful floral and tropical aromas. The acidity keeps it all together; rich without being cloying. It’s a beautiful wine with a long life ahead and the perfect drink for a celebration without being prohibitively expensive. Drinking way above its price point.
Champagne Henriot Brut Blancs de Blancs NV on the list at Timpones $75
Numerous retailers around the country, about $50.
