Ghost Train Orchestra, THE MUSIC OF MOONDOG

“Most tourists who come to New York City for the first time seek out sights like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. But between the early 60s and 1972, visitors with a more adventurous nature had a different agenda. “Certain people flying into the city at that time would jump into a cab and tell the driver – ‘take me to Moondog!” said Robert Scotto, author of a book about the eccentric musician and composer who went by that luminous name. “The driver would take them straight to 6th Avenue and 53rd Street because everyone knew that’s where he was.”– The Guardian

The Music of Moondog, performed by the inimitable Ghost Train Orchestra, is now available for touring. The sixteen members of the orchestra, under the direction of Brian Carpenter, are leading today’s audiences in a rediscovery of Moondog, the idiosyncratic musical genius who shared his performances with passersby on the streets of Manhattan.

Artists who lead the contemporary music conversation and have championed Moondog’s catalog include the Kronos Quartet, Rufus Wainwright, David Byrne and Philip Glass. At the forefront of this “Moondog Renaissance” is The Ghost Train Orchestra, a “superb band of New York-based vanguardists” (Peter Margasak). In performance, guest artists can easily be integrated into the presentation based on location and logistics, allowing for a uniquely creative evening every time.
